Rick Derringer, ‘Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo’ Guitarist, Dies at 77

Rick Derringer, the guitarist celebrated for hits like “Hang On Sloopy” and “rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” and a prolific producer for artists ranging from Cyndi lauper to “Weird Al” Yankovic, has died at age 77. His caretaker,Tony Wilson,announced the news via Facebook,stating Derringer passed away on Memorial Day in Ormond Beach,Fla. Wilson and Derringer’s wife, Jenda Derringer, were reportedly at his side. The cause of death was not disclosed. Derringer had been dealing with several medical issues, according to his social media.
Derringer frist gained prominence in the mid-1960s with The McCoys. Their song “Hang On Sloopy” became a No. 1 hit when Derringer was just 16.
In 1973, Derringer released his debut solo album, “All American Boy,” featuring the hit song “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.” Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he worked as a session musician with artists such as Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Kiss, and Barbra Streisand. He also toured with Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band.
Derringer’s production credits include several “weird Al” Yankovic albums, including Grammy-winning songs “Eat It” and “fat.” He also produced “The Wrestling Album” for the World Wrestling Federation, featuring Hulk Hogan’s theme song “Real American.”
