Rip the net and swing a weapon… Coastguard seizes two Chinese fishing boats for illegal fishing

Two Chinese boats that ran away from illegal fishing off the coast of Socheong Island in the northern part of the West Sea were caught by the Coast Guard.

According to the Korean Coast Guard on the 28th, the Central Coast Guard’s 5th West Sea Special Guard seized two 30-ton Chinese boats in the waters 100 km southwest of Socheong Island, Ongjin-gun, Incheon around 8: 05 pm the previous day, for breaching the Fisheries Sovereignty Act of the Economic Zone.

These fishing boats were found to have caught 40 boxfish by catching them in our exclusive economic zone without permission.

After being caught by the 3005th vessel belonging to the guards, they fled about 11km while cutting the net​​​​​​​​​​​​ and zigzagging in violation of the order to stop the vessel.



During the capture process, it was confirmed that the Chinese captain was fiercely opposed to brandishing a weapon. The Coast Guard intends to consider whether to lay additional charges, such as special obstruction of justice, on the captain.

The Coast Guard plans to send two Chinese boats to the pier especially for the Incheon Coast Guard around 9:00 pm on the same day, and investigate the details of the illegal fishing against the captain and crew.

This month, the number of Chinese vessels involved in illegal fishing in the waters near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea averaged 79 per day, up 36 percent from 58 last month.
