Former batsman and now commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has insisted that Rishabh Pant is definitely included in India’s playing eleven for the ICC T20 World Cup in June. Rishabh is the wicket keeper who is currently in the World Cup squad. KL Rahul and Malayali player Sanju Samson are competing to be the second wicket keeper.

T20 World Cup 2024: Here it is, Sanju too for the World Cup! Did you get the call? A critical clue

While Rahul and Sanju are available as wicket-keeping options, Manjrekar has made it clear that he will support Rishabh in the team. He pointed out the reason for this. We have Sanju and Rahul in the wicketkeeper role. Both are very good.

But I support Rishabh for the 15 man squad and play eleven. Manjrekar also pointed out that Rishabh is the one who can score a century in 60 balls and win the team when it comes to a big stage like the T20 World Cup semi-final.

It is said that India will announce the World Cup squad this week or next week. Along with the 15 member squad, five people will be included as reserve players in the team. News agency PTI has reported that Rishabh has a place in the 15-member squad. The report also says that Rahul has an edge over Sanju as a backup.

While Rishabh has been a match-winner for India in both Test and ODI formats, he is yet to repeat this feat in the T20 format. He has played 66 matches for India in T20. But out of these, Rishabh managed to score only 987 runs at a poor average of 22.43 at a strike rate of 126.54. The player has only scored three fifties. For this reason, many people had earlier demanded that Rishabh be kept out of the T20.

No one expected that Rishabh would make it to the Indian team in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Jitesh Sharma and Sanju were the favorites for the role. There were also concerns about the form and fitness of Rishabh who has not played a single match since December 2022 due to injury. The IPL saw its return after a long hiatus. But Rishabh is performing beyond expectations in both the batsman and wicketkeeper roles.

After Jitesh became a huge flop in the IPL with the Punjab Kings, Rishabh quickly rose to the role of first choice wicket keeper in the World Cup. That is what the Indian team management wanted.

He is currently the third highest run-getter in the IPL. Rishabh scored 342 runs including three fifties from nine innings. He has an average of 48.85 and a strike rate of 161.32. After Rishabh, Sanju (314) and Rahul (302) have the most runs among Indian wicket-keepers.
