Researchers are working to identify the drivers behind a rise in early-onset cancers, which are diagnoses occurring in people under the age of 50. While colorectal cancer has been a primary focus of these concerns, the National Cancer Institute reported on May 14, 2025, that more than 10 other common cancers are also being diagnosed more frequently in this younger demographic.

Historically, a colorectal cancer diagnosis in an individual under 50 was considered unusual, typically occurring only in those with specific genetic predispositions. The current trend suggests a shift in the epidemiology of these diseases, prompting a search for environmental or lifestyle factors that may be contributing to the increase.

Case Study of Early-Onset Diagnosis

The challenges associated with early-onset cancer are illustrated by the experience of Ryan O’Grady, a mathematics professor who was 43 years old when he began experiencing gastrointestinal issues in February 2023. Despite being generally healthy, his symptoms became more frequent and severe toward the end of the year.

After visiting an emergency room and undergoing a colonoscopy, O’Grady received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer on December 27, 2024. Reflecting on the possibility that the cancer was present during a family trip to Disney World earlier that year, O’Grady stated, I don’t know. You can’t really say if it was, but I think about it.

Research Roadmap for Prevention

To address these rising rates, a new perspective published in the journal Cell outlines a roadmap designed to accelerate the discovery of cancer causes. This initiative aims to stimulate methodological, resource, and conceptual advances to improve how researchers understand cancer etiology in the era of early-onset cases.

The roadmap focuses on three primary areas of advancement:

  • The discovery of the causes of cancer.
  • The improvement of cancer risk assessment.
  • The characterization of cancer preventability.

By advancing these areas, researchers hope to create more effective frameworks for managing and preventing cancers that are appearing in younger populations.

Generational Challenges

The rise of cancer in adults aged 20 to 40 is being described by Gustave Roussy as a challenge for an entire generation. This specific age bracket represents a critical area of study as researchers attempt to determine why these malignancies are appearing decades earlier than traditionally expected.

The effort to stop the rise of early-onset cancers involves integrating genetic research with a broader understanding of the environment and public health trends. By identifying the specific drivers of these trends, medical professionals aim to develop targeted prevention strategies to reduce mortality and morbidity in younger adults.
