Among the athletes taking part in the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games (2024 Gangwon), the athlete garnering the most attention by far is men’s figure skating prospect Kim Hyeon-gyeom (16).
Kim Hyun-gyeom, who is the only male singles representative at Gangwon 2024, took part in the International Skating Union Junior Grand Prix Final this season and won a silver medal, making his name known on the world stage with his best performance ever. An interesting fact is that the rising star of the figure skating world once dreamed of becoming a football player, albeit briefly. He said, “While working at a football club, I realized that I didn’t have the athletic ability to play ball games, so I looked for sports that I could focus on on my own rather than team sports. “Then I started wearing figure skates.”
However, instead of having professional goals, he began his figure skating career with the mindset of following his career as an athlete for the time being. Then, a life-changing moment happened in the living room of his house six years ago. Kim Hyun-gyeom said, “I became seriously aware of the Olympics after accidentally watching Cha Jun-hwan’s figure skating competition at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on TV.”
Since then, every season, I have worked hard to show delicate expression in skating and artistic score (PCS), and this season, I am working with a foreign choreographer for the first time and dreaming of new changes . In particular, his goal in Gangwon 2024 is to increase his jump success rate, which is his strength, and show ‘clean acting’ without remorse through appealing acting skills.
Kim Hyun-gyeom said, “I think the biggest competition for figure skaters is the Olympics. “These Youth Olympics are the biggest competition of my life,” he said. “First of all, my biggest desire is to perform cleanly and not be nervous in a big competition called the Olympics. “I will not be pushed by the pace of the opponent and I will play at my own pace,” he promised.
