The Silent Danger of Herpes Zoster in the Elderly: Symptoms, Complications, and Prevention

“Herpes zoster”..a dangerous disease for the elderly

Does anyone know?…that shingles is a disease that becomes more common with age. And pain and complications in older adults are often more severe and last longer than in the general population…

Shingles is a disease caused by the Varicella Zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. When the body first gets this type of infection It will cause chickenpox. When you have recovered from chickenpox Some viruses hide in nerve ganglia. As we grow older or the body is weakened, the virus exits the ganglion and manifests itself as shingles symptoms.

There are 3 stages of shingles symptoms:

  • In the first stage you will experience low fever, aches and pains and a burning sensation in the body in the area where the rash is about to appear because the nerves are inflamed. At this stage it cannot be said that it is shingles. Some people feel a tingling sensation on their skin or have a severe headache, some people think this. I myself suffer from migraines. If it is the optic nerve, there may be eye pain and red eyes, if it is the auditory nerve, there may be ear pain. Until the rash appears and starts to enter phase 2.
  • Phase 2, where a rash and red blisters will first appear and turn into clear blisters.
  • Phase 3: There will be an alignment of the rash along the nerves. The common nerves are in the area One side of the body, the face, etc., and normally for people with a normal immune system, the disease occurs along the nerves only on one side.

Those experiencing symptoms of shingles should consult a doctor immediately to receive correct and appropriate treatment to recover quickly from the disease. The rash caused by shingles may go away on its own within two weeks. But some older people may experience chronic nerve pain. This can cause pain for another 3 to 12 months.

Older adults who have shingles are also at increased risk for complications. The older you get, the more severe and long-lasting it becomes, like chronic nerve pain. Often there is deep pain. Burning pain all the time. It could hurt even with the slightest touch. Or if it happens around the eyes Some older adults may have serious complications that can lead to blindness. And even more so if the herpes zoster virus spreads outside the nerve line. The virus can spread to the brain and other internal organs, such as the liver, lungs, or meningitis. which could cause death

Shingles is a disease that can be prevented by getting vaccinated against shingles to reduce your chances of developing it. It also helps reduce severity, reduces pain, and reduces the chance of complications from shingles. It is recommended that people aged 50 years and older get vaccinated and should do so before the age of 60 for better immunity. Helps reduce the chance of contracting shingles.

Also, maintain good health by eating nutritious foods. Get enough rest. Exercising regularly To make your body strong and immune to germs It is another way to help reduce the risk of shingles…
