Russia and China Veto US-led Cease-Fire Resolution for Gaza at UN Security Council

(AFP, United Nations Headquarters, New York, 22nd) Russia and China vetoed a draft resolution led by the United States on the cease-fire in Gaza at the United Nations Security Council today.

Israel’s main ally, the United States, proposed the above draft resolution after vetoing its previous ceasefire demand, hoping that the Security Council would support “the need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire” and condemn for the first time the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

Russia and China used their veto power in the Security Council, Algeria also voted against it, and Guyana abstained; 11 other members of the Security Council voted in favour, including France and the United Kingdom, who are permanent members of the Security Council.

Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, said the text of the draft resolution would do nothing to contain Israel and mocked Washington for talking about a cease-fire after “Gaza has almost disappeared from the face of the earth.”

According to official Israeli data, Hamas launched its deadliest attack on Israel on October 7 last year, killing more than 1,160 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 people hostage, of whom 130 are believed to be still alive. .In Gaza, including 33 people may have died.

Israel launched an attack in immediate retaliation. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, around 32,000 people have been killed, most of them civilians. In addition, the United Nations has warned of an impending famine in Gaza. (Translator: Xu Ruicheng)
