Russia says it could send troops to Cuba if security negotiations with the US fail

[이데일리 하지나 기자] Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryafkov warned on the 13th that Russia could deploy troops in Cuba and Venezuela if current tensions with the United States escalate.

Deputy Minister Ryafkov, who led the Russian delegation to the security negotiations with the United States on the 10th, said in an interview on the same day that “nothing can be confirmed or ruled out” about possible developments in the event of a failure in negotiations.

He continued, citing President Putin’s warning that the US could take military action if it provokes Russia and increases military pressure.

Russia has deployed a massive 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine since last year, and US intelligence officials have raised rumors of a Russian invasion of Ukraine as early as this year. However, Russia has denied the rumors that it is preparing to invade Ukraine, arguing that the US and NATO are threatening Russia by increasing military aid to Ukraine.

He is also demanding that the U.S. and the West adopt a legally binding document stating that Ukraine does not join NATO, and that NATO does not deploy offensive weapons in neighboring countries such as Ukraine. It is reported that Russia delivered two documents to the US on the 15th of last month, including a proposal for a security guarantee treaty between Russia and the United States and an agreement on security measures between Russia and NATO member states.

In this regard, the first negotiations between Russia and the United States were held in Geneva, Switzerland on the 10th, followed by negotiations between Russia and NATO in Brussels, Belgium on the 12th, and on that day, between Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna, Austria done.
