Russia Strikes Back: 6 UK Diplomats Ousted Amid Espionage Allegations
Russia Expels 6 British Diplomats Over Alleged Spy Behavior
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement canceling the qualifications of six British diplomats, citing alleged spy behavior and subversive activities. This move is considered a serious violation of the Vienna Convention.
The Russian State Security Bureau (FSB) claims to have reliable evidence that the Office of Eastern European and Central Asian Affairs of the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office is working to create military and political tensions that affect Russia and lead to a ”strategic defeat” in the war against Ukraine.
This decision effectively amounts to the deportation of the six diplomatic personnel from Britain, although a specific timeline for their departure has not been announced. The FSB statement only mentions that it will happen “as soon as possible.”
In response, the UK Foreign Office has issued a statement denying the allegations, calling them a response to Western efforts to counter “Russian-directed activities” that have taken place in several European countries and the UK. The UK has vowed to defend its “national interest.”
This development comes after Russia expelled Captain Adrian Coghill, the United Kingdom’s military attaché, in May. The reason given was that Coghill was a “military intelligence officer.”
