It has been revealed that Russia has carried out the largest air strike against Ukraine since the start of the war and even invaded neighboring Polish airspace. Tensions in the region are rising because Poland is a member of the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and NATO’s ‘front line’ in Europe.

According to Reuters on the 29th (local time), the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement that day, summoning Russia’s acting ambassador to Poland, Andrey Ordas, to protest against Russian missiles violating Polish airspace and demanding that such activities are stopped.

Earlier on this day, the Russian army carried out a large-scale air strike against Ukraine, launching 158 missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), one of which once violated Polish airspace. The General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces said, “A Russian guided missile flew over Polish airspace for about 40km,” and added, “The missile’s trajectory was tracked by the radar systems of Poland and its allies.” It is known that the Polish military once sent F-16 fighter jets.

NATO is also monitoring the situation closely. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, “I spoke to the president of Poland about the missiles, and NATO is very vigilant and monitoring the situation.” US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also immediately told Poland, “We express America’s solidarity with Poland, our ally,” and added, “President Biden is also very interested in this matter and he continue to receive reports.”

Poland borders Ukraine to the south and the pro-Russian country of Belarus to the east. Therefore, since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February last year, the possibility of being exposed to threats such as missiles exchanged between the two countries has been raised constantly. Last April, a Russian-made missile was discovered in a forest near Bydgoszcz, a city in northern Poland.

Meanwhile, Russia denies that the missile violated Polish airspace. Acting Ambassador Ordas claimed, “(Poland) did not present any evidence,” and added, “We asked for documented evidence, but it was refused.”
