Peoria, Arizona – The Seattle Mariners have released outfielder Mitch Haniger ‍after he experienced discomfort in his left shoulder during spring training.

Haniger,34,was in his second stint with Seattle. He was slated to earn $15.5 million this season after agreeing to a three-year, $43.5 million contract with San Francisco in December 2022.

The‍ Mariners announced the decision Sunday.

Putting on the mariners ⁤uniform and playing in T-Mobile⁤ Park is something‍ that ⁤I ⁤will treasure forever, said Haniger in a statement. To our fans, my teammates and all who are part of this organization, thanks for welcoming my family and me.We have so many great memories to look back on.

Haniger batted .167 with three hits, including one home run, in 18 at-bats over ‍seven spring training games. He had not⁣ appeared⁤ in a Cactus League game since March 8.

Mitch has been ‍a notable part of the Mariners’ history ⁣and ⁤will be missed, said ‍Jerry⁤ Dipoto,‍ the Mariners’ president of baseball operations, in a statement. The day he arrived for his first spring training in 2017, he⁤ established himself as one of the most focused, prepared and hardest-working players. I have appreciated the many ways in which he⁣ has made us better, inside and outside the field.

Haniger debuted in the major leagues with Arizona in 2016 before being traded to Seattle after the season. In his first stint with the Mariners, he hit .263 with 107 home runs and 306 RBIs.

He⁢ had a standout performance in 2021,‍ batting .253 with ⁢a career-high 39 home runs and 100 RBIs in 157 games. However, he has not replicated that production since.
