Sam Heughan, famed for his role in “Outlander,” is set to make his Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) debut in “Macbeth.” He will star opposite Lia Williams, known for her work in “The Crown,” in this exciting new production. This marks a critically important return to the stage for Heughan, who is eager to explore exciting roles after his time on television.
Heughan, 45, expressed his enthusiasm on Instagram, describing the role as a “full circle” moment. He recalled his early days as an extra in a “Macbeth” production and his long-held dream of playing the lead. After more then a decade primarily in television and film, the Outlander actor is returning to his roots in theater, taking on the iconic role of Macbeth.
The actor told deadline he was seeking a thrilling new challenge after wrapping up “Outlander,” which he starred in for 11 years. A visit to the RSC reignited his passion for the stage. “I sat in the auditorium and I felt that excitement…and I was like, ‘Yeah, this is the drug I’m looking for,'” heughan said. “And it’s terrifying. And I think that’s a good thing to be scared again.”
Performances are scheduled to run from Oct. 9 to Dec. 6 at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-avon.
