Sosa Seeks Reconciliation with Cubs, Will Attend 2025 Convention
Chicago, IL – After years of estrangement, Sammy Sosa appears poised to mend fences with the chicago Cubs. The team announced Thursday that they plan to welcome Sosa back to their annual convention in January, following the release of a heartfelt apology from the slugger.
Sosa’s absence from Wrigley Field and cubs Convention had become a recurring topic, particularly during Q&A sessions with fans and media.Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, whose family did not own the team during Sosa’s tenure, had previously alluded to the “Steroid Era” and the need for “honesty” from players of that time.
In 2009, Sosa was among the players linked to performance-enhancing drugs in an anonymous testing program. While he denied using illegal substances in a 2005 Congressional hearing, his legacy has been clouded by the controversy.
Now 56, Sosa released a statement on December 19th, acknowledging past mistakes and expressing remorse.
“I understand why some players in my era don’t always get the recognition that our stats deserve,” Sosa wrote. “There were times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games. I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.”
Sosa, who hit 609 home runs during his career, never received more than 18.5% of the vote for the Baseball Hall of fame.
His apology and desire to reconnect with the Cubs fanbase seem to have resonated with Ricketts.”We appreciate Sammy releasing his statement and for reaching out,” ricketts said in a statement. “No one played harder or wanted to win more. Nobody’s perfect but we never doubted his passion for the game and the Cubs. It is an understatement to say that Sammy is a fan favorite. we plan on inviting him to the 2025 Cubs Convention and, while it is indeed short notice, we hope that he can attend. We are all ready to move forward together.”
