Samsung Electronics’ labor and management concludes first collective agreement since founding

Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong ‘abolition of non-union management’
Fulfillment of promise in 1 year and 3 months
Joint declaration of labor-management harmony with the four labor unions

Samsung Electronics announced on the 12th that it had signed a collective agreement with the joint bargaining group for the first time since its inception. It has been a year and three months since Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong announced at a press conference in May of last year, “I will no longer make the word ‘union-free management’ at Samsung.”

On this day, Samsung Electronics’ labor and management held a collective agreement signing ceremony at Samsung Electronics’ Giheung Campus in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, and agreed on the provision of a union office, guarantee of paid union activity hours, and standards for union promotion activities. At the same time, a joint declaration of labor-management harmony was announced, which included the content of establishing mutually cooperative and exemplary labor-management relations. They also decided to engage in regular dialogue through the ‘Labor Union-Company Win-Win Development Council’.

The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Hyun-seok, CEO of Samsung Electronics, Kim Man-jae, chairman of the Korea Federation of Trade Unions, and Kim Hang-yeol, chairman of the Samsung Electronics Labor Union Joint Bargaining Group, Lee Jae-shin, Kim Seong-hoon, and Jin Yun-seok, chairman of Jin Yun-seok. All four labor unions established in Samsung Electronics participated in the joint bargaining group.

Previously, Vice Chairman Lee said, “(Samsung) will strictly abide by labor-management laws and guarantee the three rights of labor.” Since then, seven affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, have established a ‘labor-management relations advisory group’ composed of external experts under the board of directors, and are listening to various opinions for labor-management harmony and a sound labor-management culture. On the 10th of this month, Samsung SDI signed a collective agreement with the labor union and decided to operate a regular dialogue channel between labor and management. In May of this year, ex-Chairs of the two major trade unions, including Kim Dong-man, former chairman of the Korea Federation of Trade Unions and former chairman of the National Confederation of Trade Unions, were invited to conduct a ‘Evaluation of changes in Samsung’s labor-management relations and desirable Various proposals for labor-management relations’ were held.
