Harmful substances hundreds of times higher than the standard have been detected in 11 children’s products sold on the Chinese online shopping platforms Temu and AliExpress. These include “shoe ornaments” and “parasols” used to decorate children’s shoes.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 25th that, following an investigation into the detection and durability of hazardous chemicals in 22 children’s products sold on Temu and AliExpress, 11 products were found to contain harmful and carcinogenic substances that exceed the standard from 324 to 348 times. . The survey was conducted focusing on “children’s products”, which are expected to be purchased in large numbers before Children’s Day. The items include 22 products, including shoe ornaments, children’s bathtubs, children’s toothbrushes, children’s picnic chairs, children’s car sunshades and children’s swimming caps.

As a result of the investigation, phthalate plasticizers (DEHP, DBP) were detected in 7 of 16 shoe ornaments used to decorate children’s slippers and sneakers in quantities up to 348 times higher than the standard. Lead content up to 33 times the standard level has been detected in some products. Phthalate-based plasticizers have reproductive toxicity, including causing infertility, and among them, DEHP (diethylhexyl phthalate) is a possible human carcinogen (grade 2B) designated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Lead can harm reproductive function if exposed above safe standards and also increases the risk of developing cancer. Especially during pregnancy, it can affect brain development and cause problems in the baby’s learning and behavior.

Phthalate plasticizers have also been detected in children’s umbrellas at a concentration approximately 324 times higher than the standard level. A large amount of hazardous substances has been confirmed in some parts of the product, including a higher-than-standard lead content. Additionally, physical testing has shown that the parts could break into pieces with even a small amount of force, increasing the risk of children swallowing them and choking.

Additionally, several items that received noncompliant results in the safety survey were confirmed, such as cadmium in children’s bathtubs exceeding the standard by 6.3 times and lead content in children’s swimming caps exceeding the standard 20 times.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to select items that are expected to be in high demand on a monthly basis and finalize the actual inspection items by consulting three professional testing agencies. It was decided to conduct a weekly risk test on the selected topics and publish the results on the websites of the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul E-commerce Center.

Kim Gyeong-mi, head of fair economy of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said: “After the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced measures for overseas online platforms on the 8th, the number of smart consumers using direct shopping at the foreign trade is decreasing”. will continue to conduct thorough safety inspections to prevent harm to consumers through thorough handling of products imported from abroad. “We will actively prevent it,” he said.

For damages or consumer complaints caused by foreign online platforms, call the Seoul E-Commerce Center hotline (2133-4896), call 120 Dasan Call, or contact the E-Commerce Center website.
