Samsung Research, a leading research and development (R&D) organization of Samsung Electronics, and the Polish Research Center (SRPOL) joined Samsung Electronics last month 7th to 8th At the 7th Machine Translation Society (WMT22) held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, he jointly won the two machine translation competitions held by the Machine Translation Society.

Machine translation is the translation of different languages using a computer, and Samsung Research conducts research and development using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

In this competition, Samsung Research’s Global AI Center Language Laboratory participated in the two-way English ↔ Spanish translation in the biomedical domain-specific translation category and won the first prize.

The domain-specific translation, held every year by WMT, is a biomedical field, and is considered a field that requires the highest level of technical skills even among specialists due to the large number of specialized terms. In this competition, the participating teams competed fiercely for a total of 14 translations, including English, Spanish, German and French.

In order to overcome the limitations that the same word is translated differently depending on the domain and that there is not much learning data for specialized terms due to the low frequency of use, soft limited term translation ((technical terms specific to’ w translation).) technology to provide and learn basic data in the translation process so that the correct technical terminology emerges from the language)’ Through this, the translation performance improves and the technical terminology is improved so that the terminology can be reflected in the result as much as possible, leading to a good evaluation.

Samsung Research currently provides a translation service (Korean-English) for patents under ‘SR Translate (Example)’, we conduct specialized translation research for the domain.

In addition, the Polish Institute came second in translation in two languages, English → Russian and English → Croatian, in the general category, which evaluates news translation.

The Polish Institute has been achieving good results in the field of machine translation, winning for four consecutive years in the competition held at the International Workshop on Oral Translation (IWSLT) between 2017 and 2020.

Samsung Electronics plans to continue using AI technology to overcome language barriers by undertaking various research and development efforts in the field of machine translation, while demonstrating its capabilities on the global stage.
