San Diego Padres Suffer Another Loss in Pittsburgh: Losing Streak Extends

The San Diego Padres Continue to Struggle with Losses

By Hong Ji-su

In a disappointing away game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the San Diego Padres suffered a crushing 1-7 defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 Premier League on June 29th (Korea time).

The Padres’ starting pitcher, Blake Snell, delivered a commendable performance, allowing only 2 runs on 3 hits and tallying 10 strikeouts in 6 innings. However, the team struggled to make any breakthroughs against the stellar pitching of Pittsburgh’s starter, Mitch Keller. San Diego’s bullpen also faltered, exacerbating their defeat.

Following a 0-2 loss against the Washington team on the 25th, the Padres are now on a four-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Pirates managed to secure their second consecutive win. Notably, Bae Ji-hwan was absent from the game.

Kim Ha-seong, who played as the second baseman and led the team as the first hitter, failed to make an impact with 0 hits in 4 at-bats. Consequently, his batting average for the season dropped to .254 from its previous .258.

Although overshadowed by the team’s defeat, Ha-seong Kim had a remarkable game against Washington on the 26th, hitting a home run and garnering 2 walks. Unfortunately, he couldn’t maintain the same momentum from the previous day (28th), when he achieved 3 hits and 2 RBI.

In his first at-bat in the first inning, Kim struck out after facing a 94.5 mph sinker on the 5th pitch from Keller, the opposing pitcher.

A Challenging Game for San Diego

San Diego’s hopes began to fade as starter Snell hit a two-run home run off Santana, allowing the Pirates to take a 0-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second at-bat in the second inning, Kim retired after hitting a fly ball to the left fielder. He then stopped with a fly ball to the third baseman in the fifth inning. Despite swinging at Keller’s first pitch sinker, Kim failed to score.

San Diego appeared to close the gap when Zander Bogarts landed a timely hit in the top of the 6th inning. However, in the bottom of the 7th, the second pitcher, Nick Martinez, struggled to control the ball, resulting in 5 runs being scored against the Padres.

In the top of the 7th inning, Kim Ha-seong struck out on a swing.

With an opportunity to load the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Kim Ha-seong stepped up to the plate while the team was trailing by six points. The opposing pitcher, right-hander Cody Bolton, proved too challenging. Kim hit a ground ball in front of the third baseman, effectively ending the game.
