Indian badminton star[2]Satwiksairaj Rankireddy faced a devastating personal loss as his father, Kasi Viswanatham, passed away due to a cardiac arrest. The tragic incident occurred just as Viswanatham was heading to New Delhi to witness his son receive the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award of 2023, which is regarded to be the highest sporting honor in the country.

“Satwik has lost his father this morning,” said a source close to the family in a quote from PTI, exposing the brutal stigma of humanity of loss and sadness within the sporting fraternity.

Having long served as a physical education teacher, Viswanatham had eagerly planned to accompany his wife, Rangamani, for the special occasion to share this celebration of prestigious Karma as much as that the awareness of his dad’s personality as a man had nurtured his beloved son into professional badminton, an inspiration of growing talent and leadership.
However, during his journey from Amalapuram to the airport in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, Viswanatham suffered a fatal cardiac arrest whilst traveling in a vehicle with his wife and friend. Upon arrival at hospital, his death was confirmed by doctors announcing him near dead.

The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest athletic honor, is awarded annually and is named after hockey legend Dhyan Chand. It recognizes the highest point of excellence of Indian sports governed by concerned Departments of Government of India. The honor would have been awarded by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, during a prestigious function scheduled this week.

Satwik had achieved international fame throughout 2023 with numerous awards including teammate Chirag Shetty and garnered multiple titles in his career, from the Gold at 2022 Asian Games, 2022 Commonwealth Games, and the 2023 Asian Championships.
