[디지털투데이 AI리포터] Japanese media Gigagene reported on the 11th (local time) that about 130 scientists from 20 countries around the world have signed the pledge to use ethical artificial intelligence (AI) for protein design.

With recent advances in artificial intelligence, so-called “protein design” is undergoing further acceleration. This is expected to be a major breakthrough in the development of new drugs or the discovery of treatments for diseases. However, the risk has also been raised that, if abused, it could cause serious danger to life or that it could be used as a biological weapon.

As a result, scientists attending the summit held at the University of Washington’s Protein Design Laboratory announced a pledge titled “Community Values, Guiding Principles, and Efforts for the Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence for Protein Design.”

This commitment contains promises of safety, fairness and ethical responsibility related to artificial intelligence.

It is reported that 131 scientists have signed the pledge, including renowned scientists such as Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Francis Arnold and Eric Horowitz, Microsoft’s chief scientific officer.

Regarding this effort, David Baker, director of the Protein Design Lab at the University of Washington, said: “The responsible use of artificial intelligence in protein design will greatly aid in the development of new vaccines, medicines and materials sustainable” and added: “As scientists, we don’t know whether AI will be misused and cause harm.” “We must strive to achieve the development of artificial intelligence while minimizing this possibility,” he stressed.
