SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Defense won this championship.

Devon Witherspoon, Derick Hall, Byron Murphy and the rest of Mike Macdonald’s ferocious unit pummeled Drake Maye, and the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 on Sunday to win the franchise’s second Super Bowl.

Sam Darnold threw a touchdown pass to A.J. Barner, Kenneth Walker III ran for 135 yards, and Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record by making all five of his field-goal tries. It was a dominant performance, echoing the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl victory a dozen years prior.

Uchenna Nwosu punctuated the defensive showcase by intercepting a pass intended for Maye – after Witherspoon hit his arm – and running it back 45 yards for a pick-6. The play effectively sealed the victory, adding a final exclamation point to a day defined by Seattle’s defensive prowess.

Seattle’s “Dark Side” defense helped Darnold become the first quarterback from the 2018 draft class to win a Super Bowl, surpassing Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Lamar Jackson. It was a remarkable turnaround for Darnold, who had been labeled a bust and bounced between teams before finding a home – and success – in Seattle.

Labeled a bust, dumped by two teams and considered expendable by two others, Darnold proved his doubters wrong while helping the Seahawks go 17-3 this season. He didn’t turn the ball over in three playoff games, a testament to his improved decision-making and the protection afforded by Seattle’s offensive line.

While not statistically spectacular – finishing 19 of 38 for 202 yards – Darnold managed the game effectively, avoiding costly mistakes against a solid Patriots defense. He was a steady hand, allowing the Seahawks’ defense and running game to carry the load.

The Seahawks sacked Maye six times, with Derick Hall and Byron Murphy each recording two. Hall’s strip-sack late in the third quarter created a short field for the Seahawks, leading to a 16-yard touchdown pass from Darnold to Barner and extending Seattle’s lead to 19-0.

Julian Love’s interception later in the fourth quarter set up another field goal, pushing the score to 22-7. The Patriots, struggling to find any offensive rhythm, punted on their first eight possessions, excluding a kneel-down to end the first half.

Down 19-0, Maye and the Patriots finally found some success in the fourth quarter. He connected with Mack Hollins for a 24-yard gain and then delivered a perfect 35-yard touchdown pass to Hollins, cutting the deficit to 19-7. However, the late surge proved insufficient to overcome the Seahawks’ dominant performance.

The Patriots’ comeback attempt fell short, a stark contrast to their historic Super Bowl LI victory where they rallied from a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons. Maye, who had been a runner-up for the AP NFL MVP award, couldn’t replicate that magic.

Maye had a chance to further close the gap, but his ill-advised pass into triple coverage was intercepted by Love, effectively ending any realistic hope of a Patriots comeback. Nwosu’s subsequent pick-6 further cemented the Seahawks’ victory.

Maye’s late 7-yard touchdown pass to Rhamondre Stevenson was a consolation prize, doing little to alter the final outcome.

The Seahawks took an early lead on Jason Myers’ 33-yard field goal on the game’s opening drive. Myers continued to be a reliable presence, adding field goals from 39 and 41 yards to extend Seattle’s lead to 9-0 at halftime. He capped off his perfect day with another 41-yard field goal early in the third quarter, making it 12-0.

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez made two crucial plays in the second quarter, preventing potential touchdowns. He raced back to swat away a deep pass to Rasheed Shahid, and later knocked down a pass intended for All-Pro wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

The Seahawks’ defensive line consistently pressured Maye, exemplified by Rylie Mills pushing left guard Jared Wilson into Maye, resulting in a sack.

The Super Bowl halftime show featured a visually stunning performance by Bad Bunny, accompanied by appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. Bad Bunny performed entirely in Spanish, bringing a vibrant and energetic atmosphere to the event.

The Patriots failed to win their seventh Super Bowl, which would have set a new NFL record. They remain tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers with six championships.

AP NFL Coach of the Year Mike Vrabel was aiming to become the fifth person to win a Super Bowl as a player and head coach, and the first to achieve the feat with the same team. However, his Patriots fell short against a determined Seahawks squad.

The 23-year-old Maye was attempting to become the youngest quarterback to win a Lombardi Trophy, a record currently held by Ben Roethlisberger.
