US Navy Special Forces Train for Potential Taiwan Mission

A British newspaper has revealed that US Navy Special Forces Squad No. 6, the elite team responsible for taking down al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, is currently training for a mission to assist Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

The Special Forces team, based in Virginia Beach, has been planning and training for over a year to prepare for a potential conflict in Taiwan. This development highlights the growing focus of the US on deterring China from attacking Taiwan.

According to the Financial Times, the secret drills confirm that Washington is ramping up preparations to deal with a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan. This comes after Phil Davidson, the former commander of US forces in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, warned in 2021 that China could attack Taiwan within six years.

Despite American officials insisting that conflict with China is “neither imminent nor inevitable,” the US military is accelerating emergency preparations in light of the modernization of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. This is in line with President Xi Jinping’s order to develop the capability to occupy Taiwan by force by 2027.

The Elite Special Forces Division 6

Special Forces Division 6, also known as “Delta Force,” is the US Army’s most elite unit. Affiliated with the Joint Special Operations Command, part of the US Army’s Special Operations Command, this division is tasked with some of the US military’s most sensitive and difficult missions.

As the threat posed by terrorist groups declines, special operations forces have joined the American military and intelligence community in intensifying their focus on China. The CIA has also increased its focus on China, with 20% of its budget now dedicated to China, representing a 200% increase in three years.

China’s Stance on Taiwan

China has consistently stated its commitment to peaceful “reunification” with Taiwan, but has not ruled out the use of force. The US is committed to helping Taipei secure its defenses, as outlined in the Taiwan Relations Act.
