Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus: A Detailed Review of the Top Reference Headphones

(Cnet Korea = Reporter Shin Dong-min) Just as there are the top three Jjambbong restaurants in the nation, there are also reference headphones that are considered the top three. These are Sennheiser ‘HD600’, AKG ‘K701’ and Beyerdynamic ‘DT880’. In particular, Sennheiser HD600 has been considered the best product among users since its first appearance in 1997.

The new ‘HD490 PRO Plus’ from Sennheiser, the absolute leader in reference headphones, is an open over-ear headphone for professionals. This product is based on an open chassis and adopts an open-back design in which the driver’s exterior is open. We used Sennheiser’s new reference headphones, “HD490 Pro Plus”, for two weeks and examined its features.

■ Stunning design and build quality are unrivaled

As the name suggests, the main purpose of reference headphones is to provide pure and accurate reference sound without any decoration or distortion. For this reason it is mainly used for professional audio work such as studio monitoring, audio production, mixing and mastering.

The base model “HD490 Pro” of the Sennheiser HD490 Pro Plus comes with a headphone case, a 3-meter long cable, and an extra fabric headband pad. First, the headphone case is made of fabric, but its shape protects the headphones and the engraved Sennheiser logo and zipper handle finish are also satisfying.

The handcrafted headphone body is luxurious, with an open headband made of shiny metal and sturdy plastic. The mug rotates 180 degrees and the letters L and R are embossed inside. Additionally, the mug on the left has Braille directions for the visually impaired, giving a sense of attention to detail.

The body of the headphones comes standard with soft and cozy velvet fabric pads and headband pads, and additional fabric pads are also provided. The two pads are called production pads and mixing pads respectively, and the frequency response varies depending on which pad is inserted. These pads are easy to replace and washable. The cable uses a 4-pin mini

■ No worries about the long working hours of professionals… The light weight of 260 g and the velvet padding improves comfort

Since reference headphones are products used in professional fields such as audio production and mixing, their wearing time is inevitably longer than that of general headphones. Comfort is very important and the Sennheiser HD490 Pro Plus is a very comfortable product even when used for long periods of time. It weighs 260g and, although there are many products lighter than this, it doesn’t put too much pressure on the ears and top of the head and users with relatively large heads need not worry.

In particular, the velvet earpads are cozy with their unique softness and warm feel, while the memory foam material is moderately soft and comfortably covers your ears. Additionally, the same material is used for the headband padding, and is also known to be easy to attach and detach and washable, allowing for clean use. Fabric pads are less hot and sticky than velvet, but can be less frustrating. Most importantly, I am pleased with the fact that it offers ear cushion options depending on the user’s taste or usage.

■ Production and mixing of sound transmitted through two ear cushions

Sennheiser HD490 Pro Plus is an open-type headphone that minimizes resonance and delivers more accurate and realistic sound. In particular, open-type headphones are believed to have a weakness due to bass loss due to the open-back structure, but this product comes with a specially designed barrel to alleviate such concerns and accurately control the sound pressure.

The 38mm driver quickly outputs audio signals with a neodymium magnet, and the impedance is about 130 ohms, which is neither too high nor too low, so there is no difficulty in driving it without connecting external devices such as an amplifier or DAP. It is also useful for general users to listen to music or movies outside of professional workspaces.

As mentioned above, the velvet and fabric pads of this product each produce different sounds. First, the treble range of the velvet pad is not crisp, and the midrange and bass sound relatively soft. On the other hand, the bass sound of fabric cover is weaker than that of velvet, while the midrange and treble sounds are relatively stronger and brighter.

Taking advantage of these characteristics, Sennheiser classified the two pads into production and mixing. Additionally, this product comes with “DearVR MIX-SE” plug-in, Dear Reality software that creates a stereo mixing environment with spatial audio technology.

Sennheiser’s “HD 490 Pro” is available for 645,000 won and the “HD 490 Pro Plus” is available for 765,000 won.
