Seong Si-kyung and Yang Hee-eun Revealed the Secret Story of Their Musical Collaboration

Songwriter Seong Si-kyung Reveals the Behind-the-Scenes Story of Collaboration with Senior Musician Yang Hee-eun

In a recent episode of the KBS2 entertainment program ‘Problem Son in the Rooftop’, singers Seong Si-kyung and Yang Hee-eun, who have been friends for 27 years, showcased their special bond that transcends the substantial age difference between them.

During the show, Yang Hee-eun, known for her reserved nature, opened up about her initial attraction towards Seong Si-kyung, stating, “I liked him without any reason. Right from the beginning, I was strongly drawn to him.”

She further revealed her deep affection for the younger singer, saying, “When we meet privately, there is no need for explanations. We somehow understand each other even without words.”

In a pre-release video, Yang Hee-eun confessed that she had approached Seong Si-kyung first for a singing project. Specifically, she shared that while recording their duet ‘Always You’, which garnered both admiration and criticism, Seong Si-kyung graciously accepted her offer.

Reflecting on their collaboration, Yang Hee-eun confessed, “I didn’t sing well,” eliciting an amusing response from MC Kim Jong-kook, who exclaimed, “Hey!”

Seong Si-kyung, who composed the song, revealed that Yang Hee-eun took charge of the recording process. Amidst the conversation, Lee Chan-won expressed surprise at the level of direction involved, to which Seong Si-kyung joked, “The story keeps growing, almost like it’s about me scolding my teacher and getting scolded in return. What nonsense!”

Seong Si-kyung continued, recalling the recording experience, “If it were any other situation, I wouldn’t dare to speak up to the teacher. But I did say, ‘Teacher, shall we give it another try?’ Later, the senior said, ‘Hey, let’s do it again.’ I couldn’t get angry.”

Talking about the challenges faced during the creation of ‘Always You’, Seong Si-kyung humorously remarked, “I wanted him to sing with a little sadness and a touch of love, but he ended up sounding like a celibate lover monk.” This statement invoked laughter from the audience.

Explaining the essence of a ballad singer’s role, Seong Si-kyung stated, “While I might personally be a jester, a ballad singer should be someone who sings about heartbreak even if they haven’t experienced it, and conveys happiness even if they haven’t felt it. Don’t all older people’s songs sound like they’re narrated by someone much older?”

Expressing her regret, Yang Hee-eun acknowledged, “Isn’t that the image associated with Yang Hee-eun? We need to break away from that. I was hoping to dispel that perception with ‘An Unexpected Encounter’, but it seems that didn’t happen.”

Seong Si-kyung concluded by sharing the most challenging part of ‘Always You’, saying, “There’s a line in the lyrics that goes, ‘Every time, my heart beats by your side.’ The pronunciation was so difficult,” resulting in laughter from everyone present.
