Seoul Approves Development of 15-Story Building with Community Center, Youth Housing, and Swimming Pool

A 15-story building with a community center, youth housing, and a swimming pool will be built on the site of the community center (office dong) in Myeongil 1-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government held the first meeting of the public housing integration discussion committee on the 22nd and announced that it conditionally approved the proposal. The Myeongil 1-dong Community Center site (327-5 Myeongil-dong, Gangdong-gu) is located a 3-minute walk from Myeongil Station on Line 5. The Myeongil 1-dong Community Center moved to a temporary building in 2021.

The building to be built on this site in 2027 will have 5 floors below ground and 13 floors above ground. There is a parking lot and swimming pool in the basement, and the 1-dong Myeongil community center, day care center, and care facilities (1st to 5th floors) are above ground. The 6th floor will contain an elderly center and community facilities for residents.

On the 7th to 13th floor, there will be youth housing where a total of 103 households can live. The plan is to create green spaces on every floor from the 1st floor to the 6th floor to provide a resting place for residents.

In addition, a car park will be built to alleviate parking difficulties in the vicinity. It was decided to build an underground public car park at the Yeomjugol Children’s Park next to the site. The Seoul Metropolitan Government explained, “We plan to further increase the parking spaces by connecting the parking lot that will be located in the community center building and the lanes and ramps in the public parking lot underneath the park. “

This Myeongil 1-dong community center site development is the third case of community center site development in Seoul. Bangi 2-dong community center in Songpa-gu was confirmed for development in 2019 and Cheonho 3-dong community center in 2021 and are currently under construction.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s stance is that it will continue to pursue what it calls ‘complex development’ with swimming pools and housing facilities in community centres. A Seoul city official said, “Currently, we have selected two community centers in Seoul as candidate sites and are reviewing whether to develop them for mixed use.”
