Shakira to Perform Free Concert in Mexico City’s Zócalo, Marking Return After Two Decades
Shakira will return to the Zócalo in Mexico City for a free concert on Sunday, March 1, 2026, nearly 20 years after her last performance at the iconic plaza. The concert, announced Friday, February 20, will cap a historic run of shows in Mexico as part of her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour.
“Beautiful Mexico! Do you remember in 2007 when I sang for you in the Zócalo? Today I want to tell you that that experience will be repeated this Sunday, March 1, at 8:00 at night,” Shakira said in a message shared on her social media channels. “You have given me so much, so much, and I hope I can return a little bit of that love you have given me.”
The performance will be a highlight of Shakira’s extensive tour through Mexico, which began in March 2025 and includes 31 dates across various cities, with 12 shows scheduled for the GNP Seguros Stadium in the capital. Prior to the Zócalo concert, Shakira is slated to perform in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, on Saturday, February 21, and in Mérida, Yucatán, on February 24.
Clara Brugada, the head of government of Mexico City, expressed her excitement about the concert, stating, “Shakira is an extraordinary Latin artist who has triumphed worldwide, and here, in Mexico, we love her very much.” Brugada also announced that part of the show will be broadcast live on her social media channels.
The Zócalo, considered the second largest public square in the world after Tiananmen Square in Beijing, holds significant cultural and historical importance. It has been a site for political rallies, social movements, and cultural events for centuries.
Shakira’s previous performance at the Zócalo in 2007 drew a crowd of 210,000 people, surpassing the previous record of 170,000 set by the Mexican rock band Café Tacvba in 2005. Organizers anticipate an even larger turnout for her return, with the Argentine band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs currently holding the attendance record for the Zócalo with 300,000 attendees in 2023, followed by Grupo Firme with 280,000 in 2022.
The upcoming concert comes as Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour continues to break records. The tour has reportedly grossed $421.6 million and sold 3.3 million tickets across 86 shows, earning Shakira a Guinness World Record as the highest-grossing Hispanic artist of all time.
Beyond Mexico, Shakira is also scheduled to perform at another major venue on May 2: Copacabana beach in Brazil, where organizers expect at least one million attendees, mirroring the crowds drawn by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga in 2025.
