Bieber’s Rehab Halted by Elbow Soreness, Return to guardians Delayed
CLEVELAND — Cleveland Guardians ace Shane Bieber is taking a break from throwing due to soreness in his right elbow, a setback in his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery.The soreness surfaced after his initial rehab start may 31 and a subsequent bullpen session.
Bieber, the 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, had been slated to make his second rehab appearance wiht Double-A Akron this past Friday. That start was scrapped after the elbow issue arose. the Cleveland Guardians starting rotation has struggled this season, ranking 6th in the American League with a 4.11 ERA.
The team will re-evaluate Bieber next week, consulting with specialist Dr. Keith Meister to determine the next course of action for the Guardians pitcher. Despite the setback,Bieber remains optimistic about his long-term recovery and eventual return to the mound.
Prior to the soreness,Bieber pitched 21 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on his 30th birthday,May 31. He faced nine batters, allowing one hit and striking out five in that outing, throwing 42 pitches.
The Guardians entered Saturday’s game 7 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central and a half-game out of a wild-card spot. Bieber’s potential return to the rotation is seen as crucial for the team’s playoff aspirations.
“I was hoping to be that anomaly, but at the same time, maybe it’s just part of the process and I’m trying to listen to my elbow and my body and do what’s best for myself and the team in the long term,” Bieber said.
