Las Vegas. A young woman who says she was raped and threatened by the retired player from the NFL Shannon Sharpe during a “problematic consensual relationship” filed a civil lawsuit against him asking for 50 million dollars in damages.
The lawyers filed the claim on Sunday at Clark County, Nevada, on behalf of a woman who appears in judicial documents such as Jane Doe. The demand also accuses Sharpe of using physical force against her and causing emotional anguish.
The woman met Sharpe in a Los Angeles gym in 2023, when she was 20 years old, and had a relationship of almost two years, according to judicial documents. Sharpe, 56, is accused of raping women in October 2024 and again in January, according to judicial documents.
Sharpe published on Monday a statement of his lawyer in X by saying that the relationship was agreed and qualifying the lawsuit as a “shameless and cynical attempt to extort” Sharpe for millions of dollars.
“It is full of lies, distortions and misrepresentations, and will not succeed,” said Lanny J. Davis in the statement published by Sharpe.
Sharpe is accused of becoming more and more abusive verbally, controller and violent over time, once threatening her by killing her and to record her sexual encounters without consent, according to the complaint.
“Sharpe was enraged when the plaintiff noticed her infidelity in her relationship or recriminated her for her other people’s activities,” says the lawsuit. “He even managed to enter the Doe Apartment Complex without his permission.”
The former player was a closed wing four times All-Pro who played in two Super Bowl championships with Denver and another with Baltimore for 14 seasons, from 1990 to 2003. He was chosen for the Hall of Fame in 2011.
Sharpe retired as the historical leader of the NFL between the wings closed at receptions (815), yards received (10,060) and TouchDowns (62). Those records have been broken since then.
Shannon has been a key element in television and social networks since its retirement. He left the sports debate program “Undisputeted” of FS1 in 2023 and joined ESPN shortly after.
