A recent study published in the ‘American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism’ found that‍ high-intensity endurance exercise can significantly‍ reduce‍ body fat⁢ levels, even if it doesn’t lead to weight loss. The study, conducted by French and Canadian researchers, recruited ⁢11 recreational male cyclists aged 50 to 66 who could maintain an average speed⁤ of 30 kilometers per hour over long distances.

The participants rode a total of 1,142 km (710 miles) over seven⁤ consecutive ⁤days, making one or ⁤two round trips along the 102 km (64 miles) road on the southern shore of⁣ the ‌St. Lawrence River across from Quebec City. They‌ were instructed to eat just enough to maintain their weight and were provided with unlimited access to breakfast and lunch buffets, dinner boxes, and snacks.

The results showed that the average body weight⁤ decreased⁢ by 1%, ⁢but body fat decreased by more than 9%. In particular, the level of visceral fat, which puts pressure on important organs, decreased by almost 15%. The total cholesterol levels of the participants decreased by more than 20%, and the triglyceride levels decreased by nearly 40%. The blood pressure was also significantly reduced.

Professor Jean-Pierre⁢ Despres, who‍ led the study, said, “These results support the idea that promoting a⁤ physically⁤ active ‌lifestyle is more important than‍ calorie ‍restriction in preventing obesity.” The study highlights the ‌importance of regular exercise in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

The study’s findings have significant implications for public health policy and highlight⁣ the need for increased investment⁢ in initiatives that ⁣promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. ‌By incorporating high-intensity endurance exercise into their daily routine, individuals can significantly reduce their body fat ⁣levels and improve‍ their overall health ‌and well-being.
