Siarhei Tsikhanouski, a leading Belarus opposition leader and husband of exiled opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, has been released after five years in prison. Tsikhanouskaya announced her husband’s release on X, sharing a video of their reunion in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Tsikhanouskaya expressed her gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump,U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg, and European allies for their support. She also emphasized that more than 1,150 political prisoners remain jailed in Belarus and called for their release.
Tsikhanouski, 46, was originally arrested weeks before the 2020 presidential election, where he planned to challenge President Alexander Lukashenko. Known for his charismatic activism and slogan “Stop the cockroach,” Tsikhanouski’s campaign saw supporters waving slippers,a symbol for eliminating Lukashenko,whom he likened to a cockroach.
Following her husband’s arrest, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya stepped in to run in his place. In 2021, Tsikhanouski was sentenced to 18 years for organizing riots and inciting hatred, later receiving an additional 18 months for insubordination.
