Krugerrand History
The Krugerrand, originally a gold coin, was first introduced in 1967.Its primary purpose was to promote the sale of South African gold on the international market. The coin’s name is a combination of Paul Kruger, the former president of the Transvaal (1883-1900) whose portrait appears on the obverse, and ”rand,” the name of South Africa’s currency.
The reverse of the Krugerrand features a Springbok antelope, South Africa’s national animal, in mid-leap.
while the coins do not have a nominal face value directly inscribed on them, they are considered legal tender in South Africa. According to the South African Reserve Bank Act of 1989, the value of gold coins in transactions should align with the price the bank is willing to pay for such a coin on the day of the transaction.
