Skull and Bones: A Review of the Infamous Pirate RPG Set in the 17th Century Indian Ocean

“Skull and Bones,” a game set in the 17th century Indian Ocean where players sail the ocean in search of the infamous Pirate King, will finally set sail on February 16 from Ubisoft for PC/PS5/Xbox Series X|S.

“Skull and Bones” was announced in 2017 and was postponed many times, but a closed beta for overseas was held in December 2023, so we will provide a review of the game in this article.

The main character is a “ship”

This pirate RPG is divided into a human part where you control the player character and a pirate ship part where you control the group of pirates led by the player.

When you start the game, you can control a pirate ship sailing in the ocean. However, when she challenged a huge fleet, he was attacked and sunk.

The protagonist wakes up after being dragged to a nearby island and character creation begins. The characters in this work do not change except their appearance, so there are no elements such as personalities or special abilities. You can repeat your character creation later and you can also change your gender.

First we will complete the tutorial on a three-person boat. On the human side, you could converse with NPCs, accept/report quests, and explore, but basically all you can do is “move, talk, or investigate.” Because the human part is just a decoration.

Originally, “Skull and Bones” was a spin-off of the “ship battles” featured in “Assassin’s Creed III” and “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.” Therefore, the main character of this work is a “ship”.

Once you’ve mastered the basic moves and arrived at the city that will be your base for your next great adventure, you can finally build your own pirate ship. This is a memorable first issue in the quest to become the Pirate King.

Once you have a ship, you can do anything you want, such as embark on expeditions to distant cities and islands, attack ships of hostile forces, and sack cities. There are also multiplayer elements with other players, so you can form a party of up to three people and complete missions, battle against powerful fleets and giant creatures, and even PvP. The ship is truly the star of this game.

Rich customization elements

There are several pirate ships available in Skull and Bones, which can be crafted by fulfilling certain conditions.

Ships have “roles” and special effects are set for multiplayer, such as attack specialization and support specialization. Therefore, there is a strategic aspect to thinking about what type of ship to choose for the next mission or battle.

In addition to “roll”, there is also a “rank” element, and the higher the notoriety of the player, the higher the rank of the ship. Basically, the higher the rank, the larger and more powerful the ship, but depending on the effect of the shot, even a low-ranking ship can function as a higher-ranking ship.

After you’ve built your first ship, it’s time to create a cannon. Cannons can be attached to the ship in each direction, and while sailing, the cannon fires in the direction the player’s point of view is facing.

There are different types of cannons, and there are cannons that attack in a large area at once, long-range cannons, and cannons that fire bombs or apply debuffs. There are also different types of cannon shells, which can be obtained by purchasing or crafting them.

As you progress through the game, you will also be able to obtain a flamethrower. Being able to create a giant fire-breathing battleship is sure to warm players’ hearts.

There is a wide range of ship customization items, including armor that increases defense power and furniture that gives the ship special abilities. With skins you can add emblems to your ship’s sails, change the decoration and color of the ship’s hull, and even set fireworks. You can also select costumes and pets for the sailors.

As you can see, the pirate ship customization elements are very deep and allow you to create your own pirate king’s ship.

Combat in Skull and Bones

Once you get the ship, the main mission will begin where you will fight against another force. Learn authentic fighting methods here.

Basically, the combat in this game is a simple structure of firing cannons at each other. However, the attacks from enemy NPCs are quite intense, and if you don’t defend yourself or recover, you will quickly turn into seaweed.

Defense greatly reduces damage taken, but consumes gauge when used. If you don’t use it just at the right time, the bar will quickly run out and you will be defenseless.

Using a repair kit will immediately restore the ship’s durability. However, it has a long cooldown, so you need to be careful when using it. Timing is important for both defense and recovery, so while combat is simple, it also includes elements of reading each other.

If you are shipwrecked, you can choose to use a resurrection kit to revive yourself on the spot, or choose to sink and respawn nearby or at your base. Regardless of which option you choose, the maximum lifespan of the ship will be reduced, so you will have to repair it at the port.

If the ship sinks, it will drop some of the items it was carrying. There’s no problem if you manage to pick it up again, but if it’s found and taken by another player, it will be lost, so be careful.

Rewards will be released when you sink enemy ships. Additionally, some ships can increase the number of rewards with the finishing move of boarding an enemy ship. Depending on your equipment, you can fire a barrage of musketeers or throw Molotov cocktails at enemy ships instead of boarding them, causing massive damage.

The opponent for the next mission will be an enemy fleet and the difficulty level will increase since it will be an individual versus group battle. Other players receiving the same mission were sunk many times.

Become a notorious pirate

This work gained notoriety. Simply put, it’s the level. The more infamous you become, the more powerful ships you can acquire and the more difficult the activities you can participate in. Infamy experience points essentially increase no matter what you do. You can increase your rank by sinking enemy ships, completing missions, or simply racing on the ocean.

Each area and enemy ship is also given a name, so you can get an idea of the difficulty level. Enemy forces in the starting area have a low level of notoriety and can be easily caught up, but troops like the French army have a very high level of notoriety. I have something good for this.

Another way to gain notoriety is to find trade routes. Trade routes are unlocked when you discover another island or a port where an island’s special products can be sold at a higher price than usual. Trade sales are huge and if you want to improve your equipment, you can make quick money by focusing on trade.

multiplayer elements

“Skull and Bones” is an MMO, so other players’ characters and ships are displayed. If you see one, you can express an emotion, investigate it, or request a party.

There are also multiplayer activities. For example, a world event will occur where players will work together to defeat a powerful fleet or an unknown giant creature that appears somewhere on the map.

Additionally, you can also recruit other players through reward tasks to destroy enemy bosses’ fleets.

Cutthroat Cargo is a PvP mode. If you enable PvP in the settings, a legendary treasure map will appear somewhere in the ocean. When you collect a map, your location will always be displayed on the general map, making you a target for other players.

It’s a hard mode where you can’t rest until you destroy every ship that comes your way, find treasure, or sink and drop the legendary treasure map. However, the reward is commensurate with the effort.

A bizarre but relaxing game

As I said at the beginning, the part where you control humans in this game is mostly just for show. At least in the closed beta test, no engaging activities were found for the human part. But it’s fine.

The main character of this game is the “ship”. Sometimes things go wrong, sometimes you get caught up in fierce battles, sometimes your ship gets damaged by endless storms. However, while sailing in the ocean you experience a thrilling feeling, expressed in beautiful graphics, while listening to the cheerful chorus of sailors. This is an element that you can only enjoy in this game.

The fun of this game changes greatly depending on the role-playing game to see how well you can become a pirate. “Skull and Bones,” a bizarre yet chilling game, releases for PC/PS5/Xbox Series X|S on February 16.
