Social Media Addiction: Why We Use It More Despite Being Unhappy

Addictive

More than ⁤one in six social media users report feeling less happy due⁢ to their social media use. That’s ‌2.6⁣ million people.

One-third of ‍users say they want to reduce their use or are even considering stopping⁣ social media altogether.

Nevertheless, despite ‌all the drawbacks, it’s not surprising that we continue to ⁢use social media en masse, says ⁢wouter van ‍den Bos, associate professor of developmental psychology ⁢at the ⁢University of Amsterdam.

“The algorithms on social media ensure that you stay on it for ‍as⁢ long as‌ possible,” says ⁤van den Bos. “They try to capture as much of your attention⁣ and your time as possible, and they are⁤ very good at that.”

Emptiness

People who are on social media all day long ⁢are more likely to report feeling emptiness or missing ‌friendship, and are less likely to say they feel ⁢fit.

“That’s becuase you often spend longer on social media than you actually want to,” says ⁤Van den Bos. ”and what happens then is that⁢ you also start to neglect other things, such as social contacts or social interaction with people. And then⁢ you start to ‌feel more and more isolated.”

contact on social media is not a substitute for social contact in real life, says the⁣ developmental psychologist.⁤ “Contact on social ⁣media can be an extension of social contact, but it’s not a replacement.”

Okay, I understand. I will adhere to all instructions meticulously. Please provide the text you‌ want me to⁢ analyze and transform. I am ready⁣ to begin.
