Begging is no longer a criminal offense

The law has been tightened to curb the growing begging in the country. Saudi cabinet approves revised anti-begging law Under the amended law, begging will be considered a criminal offense. The law allows for direct or indirect begging for up to one year in prison and a fine of up to one lakh riyals.

Encouraging begging and providing assistance for begging will be a punishable offense under the new law. The law stipulates imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to 50,000 riyals. At the same time, the law envisages more severe punishment against those who make organized begging.

Money received through begging will be confiscated

It is currently a crime to beg directly or indirectly in the streets, churches or businesses. If caught begging for the first time, there will be no punishment. But those arrested again will have to face legal action. The Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Ministry of Home Affairs are responsible for enforcing the law. The government will confiscate the proceeds from those caught begging.

If caught, he will be deported to Saudi Arabia

If caught begging is a foreigner, they will be deported after completing their sentence and paying a fine. They will never return to Saudi Arabia. If the detainees are natives or husbands or children of indigenous women, they will be exempted from deportation. In 2018, 2710 people were arrested for begging. About 80 per cent of them are women. The law also calls for the identification and rehabilitation of beggars among the country’s citizens.
