Early Retirement Claims Surge, Raising Social Security Concerns

Updated June 16, 2025

A growing number⁤ of Americans are tapping into Social Security benefits earlier then expected,⁢ according to new data from the Social⁢ Security ‍Administration (SSA). Filings for⁤ retirement benefits from October 2024 through April jumped by 276,572 compared to the same period the previous year, signaling a potential shift in retirement planning and raising concerns⁤ about the long-term stability of the Social Security system. ⁢This trend highlights the evolving role of Social Security in ⁤retirement income.

the Urban Institute projects that if this⁣ pace continues, Social Security claims could increase⁣ by half a ⁢million by the ⁢close of fiscal year 2025. May saw 350,114 retirement ⁤applications, up from 309,246 in May 2024. January’s figures were even more striking, with 409,867 ⁢filings, nearly ⁣110,000 more than the 300,178 recorded in January 2024. the SSA processed 3.4 million retirement claims in fiscal year 2024.

Notably, the Urban Institute found a rise in early claims among higher-income earners, particularly those aged ⁣62. Traditionally, individuals have waited until their full retirement age to maximize their benefits. claiming at age 70 ‍currently provides the highest monthly‍ payout. This shift in claiming behaviour impacts the role of Social Security as a safety net.

The Urban Institute warns of the long-term consequences of claiming Social security benefits early, impacting not only the retiree ‍but also their spouse, widow, or children. For example, someone entitled to $3,500 a month‍ at age ⁣67 would only receive $2,400 if they start benefits at 62. Waiting until 70 would increase the monthly ⁤benefit by 24 percent.

Glen Hendrick, a financial advisor at ⁢Old North State Wealth Management, saeid some clients choose to take benefits early due to health concerns. “They feel that they need the benefits earlier, ⁣as they worry they might not live long enough to make it to ⁤the ‘break even’ point of taking them later,” Hendrick said. He added that individuals⁤ with substantial investment portfolios might also opt⁣ for early benefits, understanding that “a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow” when applying a discount rate to Social Security benefits. This decision⁢ reflects a⁣ strategic role in financial planning.
