Mike Love Inducted into songwriters Hall of Fame After Brian Wilson’s Death

The 2025 songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony in New york City saw Mike Love, of The Beach Boys, receive his honor thursday night. the induction occurred one day after the passing of his bandmate,brian Wilson.
Actor and Beach Boys enthusiast John Stamos introduced Love, calling him “a songwriter’s songwriter.” Stamos recounted a conversation where he asked Love about his songwriting credits, to which Love replied, “I only wrote the hits.”
Love expressed gratitude, especially toward Brian Wilson, referring to him as “my cousin, brian Wilson, my first cousin by blood and my brother in music.” Stamos then joined Love for renditions of beach Boys classics, including “California Girl,” “I Get Around,” “Kokomo,” and “Good Vibrations.” The event celebrated songwriting achievements across genres.
The energetic gala at the Marriott Marquis Hotel also honored George Clinton, The Doobie Brothers, Ashley Gorley, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, and Tony Macaulay. Living Colour opened the night with a cover of Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop” in tribute to Clinton.
Clinton reflected on his early days at the Brill Building, describing it as entering “into Oz,” emphasizing that songwriting requires “consistent effort.” He then performed The Parliaments’ “(I Wanna) Testify.” Garth Brooks introduced The Doobie Brothers with a medley of “long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove.” The Doobie Brothers, including Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, and Patrick Simmons, performed ”Black Water.”
Teddy Riley presented Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins,highlighting his impact on R&B and pop music. Jerkins shared a story about his father’s sacrifice to buy him an MPC3000 sampler. Jerkins’ children performed Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine.”
Ashley Gorley’s daughter sang Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This,” and Dan + Shay performed a medley of Gorley’s hits, including Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” Carrie Underwood’s “All-American Girl,” and Post Malone and Wallen’s “I Had Some Help.” Gorley described feeling like he had “crashed a royal wedding” upon receiving his award.
Tony Macaulay, known for hits like The Foundations’ “Baby Now That I’ve Found You” and “Build me up Buttercup,” was honored with a performance by Debbie Gibson.Stephen Schwartz received the Johnny Mercer Award, with Kristin Chenoweth performing “For Good” from “Wicked.” Gracie Abrams received the Hal David Starlight Award.
The Songwriters Hall of Fame, established in 1969, recognizes songwriters with a significant catalogue of work, 20 years after their first commercial release. Past inductees include Gloria Estefan, Carole King, and Paul Simon.
