Sony has delayed the shipping date for the FX5 professional cinema camera for the second time, with European regional stores now pointing to a mid-November arrival. The rocky rollout follows an initial July reveal that promised mid-August shipments, followed by a subsequent slip to October and fresh reports of hardware display problems.
Sony Europe Store Listings Point to November 16
Sony’s official online stores in Germany and France now list the FX5 with a shipping date of November 16. That schedule sits a full month behind the October 15 ship date currently displayed by American retailer Adorama. Meanwhile, fellow U.S. retailer B&H has removed its release date entirely after previously listing timelines that have since expired, RedShark reported.
These updated European store listings arrived without any official explanation from Sony regarding the recurring schedule shifts. Sony previously managed to ship a small batch of FX5 units to select markets before the initial delay took effect.
Rear LCD Assembly Flaws Reported by Multiple Owners
The ongoing schedule adjustments stem from quality control issues involving the camera’s rear LCD screen, PetaPixel reported. Early buyers and rental houses examining early units have encountered structural failures with the display assembly. Multiple owners have documented problems where parts of the screen separate during normal handling, leaving internal electronics exposed to the elements.
Community reports across online forums emphasize that the display vulnerability extends beyond a solitary defective unit. A Reddit user identified as Vixelo documented problems across multiple devices after purchasing three separate cameras.
So from my own experience, this does not look like a single isolated unit with a manufacturing defect. We are talking about a brand-new professional cinema camera where the LCD assembly can shift during normal use and partially expose the inside of the camera. I obviously can’t say how widespread the issue is beyond the units I have personally seen, but the fact that all three of my cameras plus the rental units I’ve checked show the same behavior is concerning.
