In a column for The Guardian, gaming writer Keza MacDonald argues that Rockstar Games’ newly announced £350 collector’s box for Grand Theft Auto 6 signals a troubling shift that treats home console gaming as an increasingly exclusive luxury item. The physical merchandise bundle, officially titled Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, carries a price tag of £349.99 in the United Kingdom and $399 in the United States, yet it ships without a copy of the game itself.
Inside The £350 Vice City Collection Merchandise Package
According to reporting from NME and Tech.Yahoo.com, the limited-edition box launches on November 19 and is available for pre-order exclusively through the Rockstar Store, limited to one purchase per customer account. The package draws inspiration from a fictional television show in the game’s setting of Leonida named Macca the Gator. Tech.Yahoo.com notes that the bundle includes a Macca the Gator figure, Oakley Frogskins sunglasses, a Leonida Keys crossbody bag, and a New Era 9FORTY snapback hat.
Additional items packed into the collection consist of a Macca the Gator magnetic mirror, a Chunkee the Manatee shot glass, a collectible swizzle spoon styled after Vice City, a razor blade keychain, an enamel pin set inside a metal tin, a sticker pack housed in a stash bag, and a double-sided souvenir poster featuring a map of Leonida, as detailed by NME. Because Rockstar previously confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not receive a standard physical disk release and instead relies on code-in-a-box distribution, buyers must purchase the £70 base game separately, bringing total spending for the physical bundle and game up to £420.
How High-Priced Merch Reflects Industry Economic Stratification
Writing in The Guardian, MacDonald points out that while expensive special editions historically cost an extra £20 to £50 for statues or steelbooks, the 2020s have seen a steep rise in ultra-expensive video game merchandise, ranging from Balenciaga PlayStation collaborations to £580 Pokémon Lego sets.
