Sony launched the Xperia 1 VIII on May 13, 2026, introducing a significant aesthetic departure from its previous flagship smartphone designs. The new model replaces the vertical camera arrangement that had defined the Xperia 1 series since 2020 with a chunky square camera island
, according to reporting from The Verge.
The redesign shifts the three camera lenses into a square block that includes the flash and a Sony logo. This module is raised from the body of the phone and slopes toward the edge. The Verge noted that while the design shares some similarities with the iPhone, it more closely resembles the angularity of recent Motorola Edge phones.
This visual overhaul distinguishes the flagship from other recent Sony releases. For example, the Xperia 10 VII also received a new look but utilized a horizontal camera bar instead of the square island found on the 1 VIII.
The Xperia 1 VIII is available in four colors: black, silver, red, and a gold version that is exclusive to Sony’s online store. The hardware features aluminum edges, a frosted glass back, and a knurled finish on the dedicated camera shutter button.
Internal specifications include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, as reported by Android Authority. Sony has focused heavily on camera hardware for this iteration to address feedback from the 2025 Xperia 1 VII, which some users felt did not provide a sufficiently impressive camera experience.
The most notable hardware upgrade is a new 1/1.56-inch telephoto sensor designed to improve long-range photography. In addition to the sensor upgrade, the device includes an AI camera assistant, which The Verge described as appearing to be an improved version of Google’s Camera Coach.
The launch comes at a time of significant volatility in the Android smartphone market. Android Authority noted that while some manufacturers like Samsung are expanding with foldable technology, other long-time competitors such as Asus have exited the market, and OnePlus may be following suit.
Despite the global launch, The Verge reported that there is still no confirmed release for the Xperia 1 VIII in the United States.
