Speeding up the phase-out of HDDs? Microsoft will limit the use of SSDs to Windows 11 boot disks starting next year

I believe that everyone will set SSD as one of the must-have hardware when building an assembled computer (masonry machine), unless the budget is really tight. Therefore, in the consumer market, both Desktop and Notebook have begun to phase out HDD-based mechanical hard drives.

However, judging from Microsoft’s recent moves, it may be hoping to speed up the process of switching the market from HDD to SSD. According to the information received by Trendfocus, OEM manufacturers revealed that Microsoft has notified that from 2023, the boot hard disk of the system pre-installed with Windows 11 must be SSD.

Although the minimum storage requirement of Windows 11 is still 64 GB, and there is no problem with HDD, in fact, the two major features of Windows 11, DirectStorage and Windows Subsystem for Android, must be enabled in an SSD environment.

Take DirectStorage as an example. This is a storage subsystem acceleration technology that allows GPU compute shaders to directly access NVMe SSDs and directly handle the decompression of game resources without bypassing the CPU, thus greatly improving game loading speed. , reduce latency, and save CPU resources.

Obviously, Microsoft’s move can release more features of Windows 11 while improving the user experience, including improving overall speed, reducing noise, and reducing weight. However, the unit capacity cost of SSD is still much higher than that of HDD, so in fact, it is really difficult to transition all over in a short period of time.
