Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release in July. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has offered a first look at annotated script pages, revealing details about the opening fight scene and the hero’s altered circumstances following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Spider-Man: Brand New Day script reveals key details of opening fight
The opening sequence of Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes place nine months after Peter Parker moved into a new apartment, now operating without the support of his friends or the public’s memory of his identity. The script, shared with Entertainment Weekly, depicts a hero responding to a crisis on instinct and with limited resources.
The scene begins with Peter reading a letter to MJ, voiced over as he sits upside down on a steel beam overlooking New York City. His phone’s police scanner alerts him to a developing situation, prompting him to action. According to the script, “He pulls his mask down, letting himself fall off the edge. He webs and swings away as music starts to play and we…BEGIN MONTAGE.”
This opening establishes a return to a more grounded, street-level approach to Spider-Man, a departure from the multiverse-spanning events of No Way Home. The script emphasizes a lone operative responding to city crime without the aid of advanced technology or interdimensional assistance.
A Homemade Suit and Tech
Without access to Tony Stark’s resources, Peter Parker has been forced to rely on his own ingenuity. Cretton’s annotations reveal that “all of his tech needs to have been made by Peter,” resulting in a new suit that reflects this constraint. The suit is inspired by the costumes worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man, featuring “real fabric, seams, wrinkles.”
Peter’s homemade equipment is produced using a “3D printer on steroids — something that could be made by a kid genius w/ limited funds,” according to the script. This emphasis on self-reliance underscores the film’s theme of a Spider-Man operating independently and adapting to a world that no longer remembers him.
Updated Marvel Logo Reflects Peter’s Lost Memories
The familiar Marvel Studios logo animation that opens each film will also undergo a subtle change for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Cretton noted that the footage within the logo will now focus on characters like MJ (Zendaya), Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), and the late Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), alongside “the memories Peter no longer shares” with them. This visual cue reinforces the film’s central premise of a Spider-Man disconnected from his past relationships.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The film is scheduled for release on July 31.
