the Changing Landscape of Fan Engagement
As someone working in graduate sport education, I observe the rapid evolution of the sports business and the new dilemmas that accompany emerging opportunities. My research centers on sports betting,a force reshaping fan engagement in the United States while together raising critical questions about responsible gambling. The 2022 FIFA World Cup provided a stark illustration of these issues.
I witnessed two students, with no prior investment in the Morocco-Belgium match, intently watching the game. One had wagered on the total number of corner kicks.
When their bet hit, I anticipated a celebratory reaction. Instead, the student immediately opened his betting app to place another in-game wager – predicting the next team to score.
While familiar with the intricacies of sports betting, this was the first time I directly observed the adrenaline rush of in-game mobile wagering. For these students, betting simply enhanced their enjoyment of a game they didn’t deeply care about. The following day, the scene repeated with five students.
Legalization and Expansion in the U.S.
Since legalization began spreading across the U.S., the sports landscape has undergone a significant transformation. In Virginia, where I reside, sports betting became legal in 2021.Currently, approximately 75% of Americans live in states where sports betting is legal, and over half have immediate access to mobile betting options.
The Business and Ethical Considerations
The economic benefits are clear: increased sponsorship revenue, larger media rights deals, and heightened fan engagement. However, the ethical implications are far more complex.
The three groups most at risk for gambling-related harm are income-constrained households, intercollegiate athletes, and males under 25.
The latter group – our students’ peers - frequently enough exhibits overconfidence,is susceptible to social pressure, and is a prime target for aggressive marketing tactics. In-game betting exacerbates these issues with constant prompts and limited opportunities for thoughtful consideration.
A Critical juncture for the Industry
Industry leaders now face a crucial decision: prioritize deeper betting integration to maximize revenue, or implement stronger protections that may limit short-term profits. This is not a theoretical debate; these are the very decisions our graduates will confront in their future careers.
