Springer Nature and CAPES agree to launch Brazil’s first conversion agreement to promote scientific research and open access in Brazil

New York | Brazil, 6 December 2023

On December 5, 2023, Springer Nature and Coordenação de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES; Brazilian Agency for Higher Education Assistance and Evaluation) officially announced the realization of a transformation agreement, the first in Brazil for both parties , and a commitment to open access. To accelerate the transition, we have committed to working together on a pilot project to be implemented in 2024.

Approximately 20% of all articles published by Brazilian researchers in all hybrid journals published by Springer, Adis, Palgrave and Springer Nature’s Academic Journals will be included in the pilot project starting in 2024. There are no additional costs associated with CAPES. CAPES aims to gradually expand its coverage across all initiatives over the next few years, reaching approximately 40% coverage by 2026.

To date, in more than 20 years of collaboration between CAPES and Springer Nature, more than 340 research institutions have had access to over 1,800 different scientific publications published by Springer.
