Dual Audio Drivers Enhance VR Experience
Valve’s new Steam frame VR headset features dual audio drivers integrated into each side of the included head strap. This placement positions the audio close to the user’s ears, providing satisfactory sound quality, according to initial impressions from a recent demonstration at Valve’s headquarters.
Reducing Vibration for Accurate Tracking
The strategic placement of these drivers isn’t just about sound; it’s also about improving tracking accuracy. Valve hardware engineer Jeremy Selan explained to The Verge that audio with strong bass can cause vibrations in the headset, possibly interfering with the outward-facing cameras used for tracking.
To counteract this, the Frame’s drivers are “mounted opposite to each other,” creating inherent vibration cancellation. This design allows for “better tracking, even with good audio,” Selan stated.
Modular Design Allows for Future Customization
The Steam Frame headset is designed to be modular, suggesting the possibility of using alternative head straps and audio solutions in the future. This flexibility adds to the headset’s appeal and potential for personalization.
