Six point zero eight million copies of Grand Theft Auto VI have already been sold ahead of its scheduled Nov. 19 release, prompting Houston Rockets center Steven Adams to warn sports leagues and media partners about a looming viewership slump.
During a team media day Q&A session in late September 2026, Adams pointed to the upcoming launch of Rockstar Games’ long-awaited title on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The performance … league-wide: GTA is dropping,
Adams said. So, look at NFL, look at all the leagues and watch them plummet, mate.
How Previous Releases Set High Stakes for Major Sports Leagues
The upcoming Nov. 19 launch marks the first installment in the franchise since GTA V arrived in 2013. That predecessor cleared $1 billion in sales just three days after its release and currently has roughly 230 million copies in circulation worldwide.
With an estimated $10 billion in global revenue, GTA V boasts a higher valuation than 27 of the 30 NBA franchises. This massive footprint leaves sports executives watching to see if younger male viewers, particularly the 18-34 demographic, pull away from live games to play the new software.
Streaming Platforms Face Potential Usage Dips Among Younger Viewers
Streaming services that rely heavily on younger sports fans could feel the pinch first. Amazon’s Prime Video package for the National Football League and NBA attracts a significantly younger audience than traditional linear television.
Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football coverage through Week 5 of the 2025–26 season drew a median viewer age of 48.6 years, compared to 54.8 years on linear TV. Meanwhile, fans in the 18-34 demographic account for 20% of Prime’s NFL deliveries, while linear partners capture about 15% from that same group.
Netflix may also experience a dip as subscribers turn to gaming. A Hub Entertainment Research study found that 56% of surveyed Netflix subscribers plan to buy the game or have already pre-ordered it. For young gamers, the game isn’t a break from their social life—it is their social life,
wrote report author Jason Platt Zolov.
Pre-Sales Climb Despite Unconventional Purchase Formats
Gamers have driven 6.08 million sales as of Oct. 13, 2026, generating approximately $594 million. Buyers are paying $79.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, despite receiving only a code in a box until the hard-copy PC version ships in the first quarter of 2027.
Promotional material has added to the frenzy. Rockstar’s half-hour Netflix special, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, drew 31.1 million viewers in its first four days on Netflix, topping English-language film offerings in 87 countries in late August 2026. The same reel garnered 31.2 million views on YouTube after its Aug. 27 upload.
Industry Observers Watch November Audiences for Shifts
Media buyers do not anticipate an immediate collapse in United States sports viewership, noting that older demographics still make up the bulk of traditional television audiences. Approximately 55% of NFL viewers fall into the 25-54 age bracket, while older fans represent a steady baseline.
Whether younger sports fans will abandon weekend fixtures for digital mayhem remains unmeasured until the software lands on console hardware. Even so, Adams joked that coaches and scouts might see their own performance dip during November before bouncing back in December, with Thanksgiving serving as the lone pause in digital engagement.
