Sudan Faces Collapse Amid Military Conflict

four years after the revolution that overthrew Omar al-Bashir, Sudan is at risk of collapse, resembling the chaos in Yemen or Libya. Fighting between rival military factions erupted in Khartoum, with violence spreading across the country.
The conflict involves the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Gen. Abdel fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti). Both sides have been accused of human rights violations.
Approximately 45 million Sudanese are trapped in their homes, fearing for their lives. At least 180 people have died, including three World Food Programme workers.
The roots of the conflict lie in the failed transition to democracy after Bashir’s removal. The social movements that drove the revolution struggled to translate their momentum into lasting political power.
On april 11, 2019, Sudan’s longtime dictator, bashir, was overthrown. The cause of Bashir’s removal was months of protests led by Sudan’s unions, which spurred a military coup from the SAF and RSF. Both Burhan and Hemeti joined forces to remove their former boss.
