Updated June 4, 2025
the Kansas City chiefs’ quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl championship was abruptly halted by a dominant Philadelphia Eagles team. The Eagles’ defense stifled quarterback Patrick Mahomes, leading to a decisive victory in new Orleans.
Last season’s Super Bowl, a thrilling overtime win for the Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers, drew a record audience of 123 million viewers. This year, though, the Chiefs faltered under pressure.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles’ defense unleashed a relentless assault on the Chiefs’ offensive line. Mahomes, typically a reliable performer, committed uncharacteristic errors, throwing two interceptions.
One interception was promptly returned for a touchdown. The other led to a score by receiver A.J. brown. The Chiefs found themselves trailing significantly before halftime.
While Worthy eventually put the Chiefs on the board, the Eagles extended their lead with scores from DeVonta Smith and three field goals from Jake Elliott.
Saquon Barkley contributed 57 rushing yards, enough to break Terrell Davis’ record for most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs.
Mahomes threw three late touchdowns, but he was sacked a career-high six times and intercepted twice. The Eagles dethroned the NFL champions and humbled former head coach Andy Reid.
What’s next
The Eagles have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, while the Chiefs will need to regroup and address their offensive line issues to contend for future championships.
