The Disneyland Resort’s newest addition, the 15-story pixar Place Hotel, has generated buzz among Disney enthusiasts with its unique pixar theme. But the hotel’s story stretches back decades, reflecting the evolving landscape of Anaheim tourism.
Originally, Walt Disney needed accommodations for Disneyland visitors. Jack Wrather, of “Lassie” TV fame, stepped in, building the Disneyland Hotel across from the park.Opening in October 1955,the hotel initially resembled a roadside motel,offering affordable lodging near Disneyland.
As Disneyland grew, so did the need for better accommodations. In 1962, an 11-story tower transformed the Disneyland hotel into a more prominent landmark, then the tallest structure in Orange County. A monorail connected the hotel and park, and Japanese-themed reflecting pools added to its unique appeal.
During the 1960s and 70s, Disneyland attracted many Japanese tourists. The Emerald of Anaheim, a 15-story hotel, opened in May 1984, built by the tokyu Group, catering specifically to this market. However, financial crises in Japan during the late 1980s impacted tourism, leading to financial challenges for the Emerald.
In 1995, The Walt Disney Company purchased the Emerald of Anaheim for $35 million, renaming it the Disneyland Pacific Hotel. Later, Disney rebranded it as Paradise Pier Hotel, with cosmetic changes to match the Paradise Pier theme at Disney’s California Adventure Park.
The shift to Pixar Place Hotel began in 2018, when Disneyland Resort rebranded Paradise Pier as Pixar Pier. With triumphant Pixar-themed hotels already in Shanghai and Tokyo Disneyland, Disney transformed the hotel into a celebration of Pixar stories and characters, a frist for the United States.
