This year we find the New England Patriots returning to the Super Bowl after the dynasty of Bellick and Brady against the Seattle Seahawks. Evaluating the seasonal progress of both teams, how do you see the purely sporting aspect of this year’s match?
Until the Conference Final between the Seahawks and Rams I would have seen it more balanced. But the way in which the Seahawks beat the Rams, where despite a result brought home in the last minutes they dominated the game, convinced me of their strength. Their quarterback, Sam Darnold, quite convinced me. However, I also said it in the commentary of New England-Denver, the other Conference Final, you shouldn’t evaluate New England based on a game played in the snow because it has nothing to do with it. Other opponents, other schemes, another field. Maybe New England didn’t shine against the Broncos, but it has all it takes to play it all the way.
But the impression is that the Seahawks have a small advantage in this SuperBowlthey seem to be absolutely superior, New England for its part has a quarterback, Drake Mayewho took them to the Super Bowl in his second year, in his second year exactly like Tom Brady did. He’s fast, he knows how to improvise, he’s created many things from nothing, he has personality. I’m poor at predictions, but it seems to me that Seattle has greater compactness and greater strength also from an aggressive point of view.

Speaking of Dynasty, the latest is that of the Kansas City Chiefs, who this year also due to Mahomes’ injury were unable to make the full journey to the Super Bowl. How do you see this NFL football page? Do you see it closed permanently or simply on pause?
I would say paused because it’s worth talking about Brady or even Manning at the time, as long as you have Mahomes as a Quarterback you don’t even need to have too many phenomena around him. You just need to have good, if not very good, players. If you have a good team he gives you that extra touch.
Ironically, the injury happened at the right time so that by July he should be ready and next year they can try again to climb towards the Super Bowl. They know they made a lot of mistakes and they also changed something in the technical staff, so I see this year as an interruption.
If you had to indicate the key faces of both teams, who would you mention?
By necessity both quarterbacks, Drake Maye is Sam Darnoldwho will always be at the center of the action and the game. Then I would say the coaches because they will be constantly monitored and therefore it is obvious that there will be a lot of attention on them. For New England, Mike Vrabelwas a great player, defender, and was the coach of Tennessee, when Tennessee won against New England itself and ended Brady’s career with the Patriots. Now he’s back home and he’s an interesting character. The other coach, Mike Macdonald, is a bit more of the nerd variety, more of the modern breed of very scientific coaches. He is more professorial, more like an expert in everything than a former player.

What is it like to live this experience directly on site?
It’s Christmas for all American football fan childrenan incredible thing. Every event is a show, there are events every day for the San Francisco community, all the artists of the city are included to make the graphics for the Super Bowl. It is an impressive thing that I have never seen even for the largest events in the world, such as the football world cup Olympics. Every day on Radio Row, where all the American media are present, all the players who may be active or legends of the past pass by these booths and are interviewed by everyone, something that is unthinkable in other sports. It’s a celebration of football at all levelsalso for the community, there are kids and teams from all over the world who play flag football. It’s such a takeover of the city and it’s beautiful.
As an insider, let’s say, in sport, how do you see the following that the Super Bowl has in Italy?
There is a large niche community that loves the Super Bowl and watches it assiduously, staying up at night and making sacrifices to go to work the next day. Football is a community that you can’t leave once you enter, because it’s passionate.

How do you see this Super Bowl on the field? What do you expect? And who sees better between the Seattle Seahawks and New England?
I see the Seattle Seahawks better, the defense is very strong. Sam Darnold has proven that he always makes good decisions, especially under pressure. Right now I see them as very dominant. But I hope for a very balanced SuperBowl, point by point until the end, until the last breath.
Nerves play a fundamental component. Football is a contact sport in which, if your mind isn’t there, you throw the game away and you don’t even notice. But I see the Seahawks as better prepared than Drake Maye who is very young and doesn’t have that much experience in the NFL and it’s the first time he’s on such a big stage.
Finding the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl recalls the period of the Brady and Belichick dynasty: do you think they can be ready to try to build something similar or is it a good season that took them directly to the Super Bowl?
The Patriots have been on a very important rebuilding trajectory in recent years, in which the Chiefs took over, so let’s say that Robert Kraft worked a lot to find a Franchise audience that was at Tom Brady level, that was “here to stay”, so in my opinion it is not an isolated season. Many say that they had an easy schedule and got to the last game of the season, but in the end they showed in the most difficult moments that they could win against everyone, so it’s not just Drake Maye or Stefon Diggs who changes various teams to get to the Patriots and find their place with a very strong and impactful defense that tackles ankles; this thing was built over many years.
This year, also due to Mahomes’ injury, the Chiefs failed to reach the Super Bowl: do you think it’s an accident or a declining phase of this team group?
In my opinion they started slowly, they encountered many difficulties, they didn’t find their dimension in terms of receivers, that is, even if they had the strongest and fastest on paper, then there were many problems. The Kelsey-Mahomes duo wasn’t as effective as usualbecause clearly there is an age component and Traviswhich is great for those reps where they put him in and he does his thing, it’s no longer as competitive as it used to be. Obviously Mahomes’ torn ACL was the final blow.
If you had to speak with players from both teams. How do you see Seattle and New England in terms of the mindset of the players of the two teams?
