US Department of Defense Inspector General Robert Storch was appointed as the main overseer of the use of aid flowing to Ukraine. CNN reports this.

Storch will begin his duties on Oct. 18, the Council of Inspectors General for Integrity and Effectiveness said. He will work with the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development watchdogs to monitor about $113 billion in aid sent to Ukraine and other countries since the full-scale war began last year.

Republican Sen. Roger Wicker, the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, joined several colleagues in applauding the appointment of the chief inspector general.

“Appointing an inspector general will help ensure that Congress supports Ukraine’s defense in the most responsible and effective manner possible,” Wicker said.

Earlier it was reported that the Pentagon has created a new team in Ukraine to monitor US security assistance to Kyiv, as more Republican lawmakers call for greater oversight of the use of funds.

The creation of the new team comes at a critical time for assistance to Ukraine. The Biden administration recently asked Congress for an additional $24 billion, including $13 billion in security assistance, as the president and other U.S. officials vowed to continue supporting Kiev “for as long as needed.”

Some increasingly skeptical Republicans are questioning how much bipartisan support for such significant amounts of aid is realistic. Republican calls for more oversight are not unanimous, though.
