Swedish climate technology firm Arbon Earth has secured a historic regulatory permit in Indonesia to operate deep-sea marine carbon dioxide removal operations. The Gothenburg-based enterprise uses natural ocean absorption by cultivating atmospheric carbon-soaking seaweed and sinking it to the deep ocean floor. Under the newly granted regulatory approval, Arbon Earth will expand its seaweed production capacity beyond its existing project site in Kenya. The company will soon launch testing operations at a new location off the coast of Lombok Island.
Regulatory Approval and Indonesia Operations
The permit allows Arbon Earth to scale up its production rate significantly to fulfill larger carbon dioxide removal purchases made by its customers. Nanna Stranne, CEO of Arbon Earth, noted that the ocean remains a critical component in addressing the global climate crisis. To implement the project, Arbon Earth is collaborating directly with Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, known as KKP. The partnership aims to ensure that the gradual scale-up of operations aligns with environmental integrity guidelines and achieves maximum climate impact. Mr. Muhammad Husnul Aini, PIC KKPRL at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, stated that the agency welcomes the innovative approach to ocean-based carbon removal. He added that the collaboration aligns with national commitments to climate action, sustainable marine management, and pioneering blue economy initiatives in Indonesia.
Global Expansion and Future Negotiations
With the Indonesian permit secured, Arbon Earth is positioning its technology as part of a growing global network of carbon removal projects. The firm currently operates an active site in Kenya and continues to negotiate with authorities regarding potential expansions into additional geographic regions. In a public statement regarding the milestone, Arbon Earth emphasized that scaling ocean-based carbon dioxide removal requires a combination of innovative science and strong regulatory support. The Indonesian permit represents a crucial step in advancing those operations to the next level.
